Europes big leagues in talks over All-star fixtures

Europe’s top leagues are in discussions over potential All-Star games between the divisions.

The idea of an All-Star game in the Premier League was recently suggested by Chelsea owner Todd Boehly, who proposed a north vs south encounter in a bid to raise fund for the rest of the English football pyramid.

Boehly’s concept received a mixed reaction with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Manchester City counterpart Pep Guardiola among those to question the need for more fixtures in an already congested calendar.

“When he (Boehly) finds a date for that, he can call me,” Klopp said on the suggestion.

“In American sports, these players have four-month breaks. Does he want to bring the Harlem Globetrotters as well? I’m not sure people want to see that: United players, Liverpool players, Manchester City players, Everton players all together.”

However, the Times are reporting that Europe’s top league are discussing the Americanised concept, in fixtures that could see a Premier League XI take on respective All-Star sides from the likes of La Liga, Ligue 1, the Bundesliga and Serie A.

The idea would be for the fixtures to be staged at different venues across the world during a summer or winter break, in a bid to further grow a global audience.

Despite initial opposition to an All-Star concept, there is understood to be a confidence that fans, particularly of a younger age, would be drawn to the fixtures.
