Potter praises ‘fantastic’ Chelsea after 2-1 win away at RB Salzburg

Chelsea secured their place in the Champions League by beating RB Salzburg 2-1 this evening in Austria.

Graham Potter’s side got off to an excellent start when Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic blasted home a superb half-volley from the edge of the area on 23 minutes.

RB Salzburg are no walkover though, coming into the game on a 40 game unbeaten home run, and three minutes after half-time the Austrians drew level when Junior Adamu finished off a slick counter-attack.

Chelsea would get their winner on 64 minutes and it was a goal worthy of winning any game. Substitute Christian Pulisic laid the ball off to Kai Havertz at the edge of the area, with the German attacker taking one touch before curling a sublime effort into the top corner off the underside of the crossbar.

Speaking afterwards Blues boss Potter was full of praise for his players after they secured such an important win.

“I’m delighted, it was a fantastic performance from the players. They showed a lot of courage with the atmosphere and the pressure Salzburg put you under,” Potter told BT Sport.

“We created chances and it could have been more than one at half-time. But one mistake, or one action, and you’re punished at this level. But it was a great goal from Kai and we deserved to win.

“Overall I thought we played well and created chances, scored two good goals and responded well to a set-back. I’m delighted for the players.
