Rangnick names 6 players he discussed signing during his time at Man Utd

Ralf Rangnick has named six players that he discussed signing during his time at Manchester United.

Rangnick was named as interim manager at Manchester United following the decision to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last season, with the agreement including a clause that would see the German continue in a consultancy role for a further two years following the appointment of a new head coach.

The 64-year-old spoke on several occasions of the need for a rebuild at the Red Devils, who ended the 2021/22 campaign with their lowest-ever Premier League points total.

Following a 4-0 defeat at Liverpool in April, Rangnick said United may need to sign up to 10 players as part of an extensive summer rebuild.

Rangnick ultimately didn’t take on the consultancy role as he moved on at the end of the season to take a job with the Austrian national side, with Erik ten Hag taking the reins at Old Trafford.

Rangnick has now opened up on the plans he had to improve the squad at United and has named six stars who were on his transfer wish-list, though the club decided making any moves for his desired players.

“There was no such [transfer] dossier, and it was never wanted by the club,” Rangnick told BILD. “But even without such a script, it was clear to everyone that there was a need in many areas.

“That’s why we were already discussing players like Josko Gvardiol and Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig. Those were names that were realistic.

“We also talked about Alvaro Morata, Luis Diaz, Dusan Vlahovic and, as I said, Erling Haaland when they were still on the market. But the club decided at that time to rebuild the team under the new coach.”
