Guardiola discusses Haaland fitness and Leicester challenge

Pep Guardiola has discussed Erling Haaland’s fitness ahead of Manchester City’s fixture with Leicester this weekend.

Haaland was substituted at half-time during City’s goalless draw at Borussia Dortmund in midweek, with Guardiola revealing that the forward had sustained a knock against his former side.

The Norwegian has started each of City’s 11 league games so far this season, scoring a league-leading 17 goals following a phenomenal start to his Premier League career.

Guardiola confirmed that the 22-year-old would be assessed ahead of City’s trip to the King Power Stadium.

“He feels better but we have training this afternoon. We will assess in a few hours,” Guardiola told his pre-match press conference.

“We will see how he is feeling, if he is fit. After we will decide. It’s not 24 hours. I will know in two hours if he is ready to play or not.”

Guardiola opened up on the challenge that faces his team at Leicester, who climbed out of the Premier League’s bottom three after thrashing Wolves 4-0 last weekend. The Foxes began the season in disastrous form, but have since won three of their past five games and have kept four clean sheets during that run.

The Spaniard insisted that Leicester are a team with ambitions to compete at the top end of the division and believes Brendan Rodgers’ side ‘are back’ after a disappointing start to the season.

“The expectations always with Leicester after what they did in the past – winning the Premier League, FA Cup, Community Shield – is always being at the top.

“Not qualifying for the Champions League for just one game when it was in their hands. The expectation is high and not easy to handle, but you have seen they have lost one game in the last four or five, so they are back.”
