Gakpo names five clubs that it ‘would be an honour’ to play for

Cody Gakpo has named five clubs that it ‘would be an honour to play for’ as the PSV Eindhoven forward considers his next move.

Gakpo has attracted interest from clubs across Europe following a brilliant period of form at PSV, with the 23-year-old named as Dutch Footballer of the Year in 2021/22.

Gakpo has started the new season in scintillating form, with 30 goals and assists in just 24 appearances across all competitions for the Dutch side. The winger has been named in the Netherlands’ squad for the World Cup and could see his price-tag soar with a strong tournament in Qatar.

Manchester United, Leeds and Southampton were among the clubs linked last summer and Gakpo has opened up on the next step in his career, naming five clubs that he would be interested in signing for.

“I think at the end of this season I will be ready to take that step,” the left winger told Dutch outlet NOS.

“I feel like I was already that way at the beginning of this season, but after this season I’m even more ready to take the next one. To take a step.”

When asked about his dream club to play for, Gakpo said: “PSV was always my dream club. I don’t really have one for the rest.”

Pressed further on a potential next destination, Gakpo mentioned a Premier League trio among the clubs he would be interested in joining.

“Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool,” he said.

“It would be an honour to play there, but I also have to see what kind of team I can best achieve my goals.”
