Chelsea have made progress in negotiations with Mason Mount over a contract extension at Stamford Bridge.
The west Londoners have been in discussions with Mount over a new deal in recent months but there has been little progress on an extension to his current contract.
Chelsea agreed new terms with Reece James in September, but have so far failed to find a breakthrough with Mount as the club look to secure the long-term future of the England international.
The Athletic are reporting that steps have now been made towards agreeing a new deal, with Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly and co-owner Behdad Eghbali having held positive talks with Mount’s representatives.
The news will come as a welcome boost to Graham Potter, with the 23-year-old having been an integral figure in the Chelsea side in recent seasons. Mount has been named as Chelsea’s Player of the Season in each of the past two campaigns and has provided 69 goals and assists in 181 appearances since breaking into the senior set-up.
He progressed through the club’s academy programme, which he joined at the age of six, and has since established himself as a prominent player for both Chelsea and England. Mount’s current deal is set to expire in 2024, but the latest breakthrough means the two parties are closer to agreeing terms.
Mount’s current contract was signed in 2019, at which point the midfielder had not made a senior appearance and was recently returned from a loan spell at Derby. His new deal will be reflective of his increased status.
