Ronaldo return to Real Madrid ‘unlikely’ despite Benzema injury

Cristiano Ronaldo is ‘unlikely’ to return to Real Madrid despite speculation linking the forward with a move to the Bernabeu.

Ronaldo looks all-but-certain to leave Manchester United following the fall-out from his controversial interview with Piers Morgan, in which he criticised several figures at the club and said he had no respect for manager Erik ten Hag.

Having agitated for an exit during the summer, his comments are expected to lead to a termination of his contract or transfer in the winter window, and Real Madrid have been linked with a move to re-sign the Portugal captain.

Ronaldo is understood to have offered his services to the European champions, after Karim Benzema sustained a thigh injury that has ruled the forward out of the World Cup with France.

Ronaldo won four Champions League trophies and scored a record-breaking 450 goals in 438 appearances during his first spell at Real Madrid, having completed a then-world record £80m move from Manchester United in 2009.

However, Sky are reporting a shock return is unlikely despite Benzema’s injury with Carlo Ancelotti retaining faith in Rodrygo to cover the Ballon d’Or winner’s absence.
