Manchester United considering reviving interest in Gakpo

Manchester United are considering reviving their interest in PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo as the club assess how to replace Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo’s exit from the club was confirmed this week with a mutual agreement reached to terminate his contract, following the fall-out from his controversial interview with Piers Morgan in which the Portugal captain criticised senior figures and said he had no respect for manager Erik ten Hag.

The departure of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner leaves United short of depth in attacking areas and the Red Devils are now discussing a plan of action for the winter window.

According to the Mail, the club’s board are deliberating whether to bring forward summer plans to sign a forward, but have reservations over the value and availability of leading targets in the January window.

Gakpo remains a target after summer interest, with the 23-year-old having provided 30 goals and assists in 24 club appearances this season. He enhanced his growing reputation with the first goal as the Netherlands beat Senegal in their World Cup opener this week.

United, however, are also considering a short-term replacement before reassessing targets in the summer. The Red Devils previously opted for a short-term signing in January 2020, securing a deal to sign Odion Ighalo on an initial six-month deal, one which was later extended until January 2021.
