Ruud van Nistelrooy has admitted that PSV Eindhoven might be forced into the sale of Cody Gakpo next month, as leading clubs circle the in-demand star.
Gakpo saw his reputation enhance with a series of fine performances at the World Cup in Qatar, with the 23-year-old scoring three goals during the Netherlands’ run to the last eight.
Manchester United have been linked with Gakpo as the club consider replacements for Cristiano Ronaldo and could make a move in the January transfer window.
Gakpo was named as the Dutch Footballer of the Year in 2021/22 and has began the new season in explosive form, having provided 30 goals and assists in just 24 appearances across all competitions.
Van Nistelrooy, now the head coach at PSV, has admitted his side might be powerless to prevent Gakpo from leaving and admits ‘there comes a time when you can’t say no’ to big offers from abroad.
Speaking to Voetbal International, Van Nistelrooy said: “If I have the choice, I prefer [Gakpo to leave in] the summer, but it can also be now. You just know there comes a time when you can’t say no.”
