Wout Weghorst is prepared to pay a compensation fee to Besiktas out of his own pocket to seal a move to Manchester United this month.
United are in negotiations over a deal for Weghorst as the Red Devils look to add a short-term solution to their squad at centre-forward. Erik ten Hag has targeted the Dutch international, but a move is complicated given Weghorst is on loan at Besiktas from Burnley.
The 30-year-old is understood to have pleaded with Besiktas to allow him to move to Old Trafford and appeared to wave goodbye to the club’s fans after scoring in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Kasimpasa.
There is no recall clause in his loan move to Turkey, but negotiations continue between the three clubs to find a solution. According to the Express, Weghorst has even offered to pay Besiktas a compensation fee out of his own pocket to facilitate a move to United.
The centre-forward is viewed as a short-term fix until the end of the season, following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo in November.
He scored just two goals in 17 appearances as Burnley were relegated last season, but scored 59 league goals in 118 games across three-and-a-half seasons at Wolfsburg before moving to the Premier League.
Weghorst demonstrated his threat at the World Cup in Qatar, as he came off the bench to score twice in the Netherlands’ thrilling quarter-final defeat to Argentina. He has eight goals and four assists in 16 league appearances for Besiktas this season.
The 6ft 6in Dutchman would add a different profile to Ten Hag’s attacking options as United look to continue their impressive recent form and secure Champions League qualification.
