Manchester United’s redevelopment plans for Old Trafford are ‘on hold’ amid the potential sale of the club.
Back in April, United announced that they were assessing proposals to redevelop their Old Trafford stadium, though any decision is now expected to be made by new ownership.
United are up for sale after the Glazer family announced their intention to seek added investment for the Red Devils, having owned the Premier League side in a controversial tenure since 2005.
One of the major criticisms levelled at the Glazers has been their role in the decline of the club’s facilities, which have been allowed to fall behind the quality of leading rivals in the Premier League and Europe.
Leading consultants Legends International and Populous – who were responsible for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – were appointed last April to discuss the proposal and have now ‘completed their assignment’.
However, the Mail are reporting that plans for stadium redevelopment are on hold while the club’s ownership situation remains unresolved.
The plans presented to the club include both the refurbishment of their current home and proposals for a new stadium built on the club-owned land surrounding the current ground.
The latter plans would cost the club around £2bn and would allow United to continue playing at Old Trafford during the construction – maximising their potential revenues during the build – while a redevelopment of the current stadium has been estimated at ‘north of £1bn’.
