EFL could reject Man City if club face Premier League expulsion over financial breaches

The EFL could reject Manchester City should the club face expulsion from the Premier League over the club’s alleged financial breaches.

City have been charged with more than 100 breaches of financial misconduct with the Premier League having announced the charges in a statement on Monday.

The club’s alleged breaches include financial irregularities surrounding sponsorship deals and revenue, breaking UEFA and Premier League Financial Fair Play rules, and failing to co-operate with the four-year investigation which has led to the charges.

City’s sanctions could reportedly include being stripped of titles won during the period of the charges between 2009 and 2018, a points deduction, or potential exclusion from the Premier League.

However, the Daily Mail are reporting that the EFL would be under no obligation to accept City should the club be kicked out of the top tier, with only 72 member clubs permitted across the three divisions.

Clubs have to apply to become EFL members after relegation from the Premier League, while the three clubs promoted from the Championship each season become shareholders in the top-flight.

In response to the Premier League charges, City released a statement expressing their surprise. City have previously faced charges of financial misconduct, having been handed a two-year ban from European football and a €30m fine by UEFA for breaching FFP regulations in 2020. Following an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the ban was overturned and fine reduced to €10m.
