Former Man City skipper ‘not surprised’ by Arteta’s success with Arsenal

Vincent Kompany says he is not surprised with the success that Mikel Arteta has had at Arsenal.

Arteta has impressed since leaving Manchester City’s coaching staff under Pep Guardiola to take his first senior role at Arsenal, where he won the FA Cup in his debut season before overseeing progress with the Gunners.

Now in his third full season, Arsenal are top of the Premier League table after a club-record start to the season and chasing a first league title since the 2003/04 campaign.

The Gunners face a huge clash with Manchester City this week, with just three points separating the north Londoners from the defending champions.

Kompany worked under Arteta for three seasons during his time as Manchester City captain and ahead of Wednesday night’s crucial meeting between the title rivals at the Emirates, has praised Arteta and his role in Arsenal’s impressive development.

”Like any good coaching staff is supposed to work he was definitely an extension of Pep, probably the one in the coaching staff that was closer to the players, and understanding fully what Pep wanted as a manager,” Kompany said, as per the Evening Standard.

“You could see Mikel was in that transition moment from being a player to being a coach. He was hungry, he was very active, full of energy, and obviously he was in a good environment to develop and grow his own ideas.

“I’m not surprised he’s been doing well with Arsenal and definitely he’s going to continue doing well, there’s no doubt about that.

“He’s got the energy and especially the resilience to deal with setbacks and keep going, draw his own conclusions and improve. That’s why I think he’s doing so well with Arsenal.”
