Guardiola takes sarcastic swipe at Man Utd following Carabao Cup win

Pep Guardiola has taken a sarcastic swipe at Manchester United’s spending over the years after the club won the Carabao Cup on Sunday.

The 2-0 win over Newcastle saw United claim their first silverware in six years as the Red Devils look to get back to former glories.

Aside from winning the League Cup, Manchester United are enjoying a positive season, currently sitting eight points off the Premier League, and are still competing in the FA Cup and Europa League.

During Manchester United’s decline over the last decade, Manchester City have taken over as English football’s most dominant side, and when asked if Erik ten Hag’s side can be among City’s biggest rivals once more, Pep Guardiola very sarcastically decided to take a pop at United’s spending.

“If they spend a little more money, yes. It’s because they didn’t spend, isn’t it?”

Since United’s last trophy back in 2017, the Old Trafford outfit have spent in excess of £800 million on transfers,

Manchester City have spent similar amounts over the same period of time, but have, however, won four league titles, four league cups, and an FA Cup, and Guardiola says United are now ‘in the position they normally should be’ given their history and budget.

“It’s normal – they’re in the position they normally should be,” Guardiola said of United’s Carabao Cup triumph. “When I landed here I thought United would always be there, for the history, for everything, and Erik is doing an incredible job. And the players – you see how committed they are, how all together they try to do it. When you have been five or six years without winning one title.

“I remember when we travelled to win our first Carabao Cup and everyone was so excited to do it. For the staff it was new, for the players it was new. The fourth time we travelled there to win the Carabao Cup for the fourth time in a row, it was ‘Well, it’s OK, another one, another day in the office.’”
