Antonio Conte says Tottenham want Harry Kane to stay at the club ‘for the rest of his career’, but admits football is ‘unpredictable’.
Kane’s future has been subject of speculation as the forward enters the final 12 months of his contract at Spurs this summer, with Manchester United credited with an interest in the England captain.
Kane has failed to win silverware since coming through the ranks in north London and has been linked with an exit in search of elusive team honours. However, Spurs are keen to tie the forward down to a new deal and are reportedly willing to continue talks into next season if required, despite the risk of losing Kane on a free transfer.
The 29-year-old became Spurs’ all-time record goalscorer last month and reached 20 goals in the Premier League this season with a brace against Nottingham Forest last weekend.
Ahead of this weekend’s clash with Southampton, Conte said Spurs want the forward to commit the rest of his career to the club but admits a departure cannot be ruled out.
“The club wants to involve Harry Kane in my opinion,” Conte said at his pre-match press conference.
“When you have a world class striker like him, you want him to stay for the rest of his career.
“But then you know football, sometimes it’s unpredictable.
“It’s not in my role to make a decision. This is a decision for the club and for Harry.”
