Guardiola relishing reunion with Man City ‘legend’ Kompany

Pep Guardiola is looking forward to welcoming Vincent Kompany back to the Etihad this weekend, as Manchester City take on Burnley in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Kompany will return to his former side for the first time as an opposition manager weekend, as City host the Championship side in the last eight of the FA Cup.

The 36-year-old is regarded as one of City’s greatest ever players and the club erected a statue of the Belgian outside the Etihad to celebrate his achievements in 2021.

Kompany captained the club to four Premier League titles during an illustrious playing career with the Citizens and Guardiola is relishing this weekend’s reunion with a former favourite.

“Everybody knows he is an important, incredible figure here,” Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference.

“He is one of the biggest legends I have had. Personally it was a pity he was a lot of time injured when we were together.

“The important thing was how he helped me from day one in another country in the locker room. In the bad moments he made a step forward to help the team.

“He said to me the things he believe was best for the club. He was an exceptional captain and a top human being.”
