Maguire insists he has ‘important role’ to play at Manchester United

Harry Maguire insists he has an ‘important role’ to play at Manchester United despite his lack of football this season.

Maguire captained the side to a 1-0 win over Real Betis on Thursday as the Red Devils reached the Europa League quarter-finals. However, the centre-back has struggled for regular first-team football this season and has started just 11 games in all competitions under Erik ten Hag.

Maguire’s minutes have seen his place with England questioned, though the defender has been included in Gareth Southgate’s squad for March’s fixtures with Italy and Ukraine as the Three Lions begin their Euro 2024 campaign.

Despite his lack of football at club level, the club captain insists he has an important role to play at Manchester United both ‘on and off the field’.

“I have an important role on and off the field at this club and every day I try and make this club succeed whether I’m playing or not,” Maguire told BT Sport.

“Obviously I want to play and start more games, but I’m playing my part on and off the field. It’s nice to get out there and lead the team, which is the most important part for myself and for the group.”
