Jurgen Klopp has discussed Liverpool’s record against the Premier League’s top six sides ahead of this weekend’s trip to Manchester City.
Liverpool face a defining week in their challenge for Champions League football, with this weekend’s clash against the champions followed by fixtures with Chelsea and Arsenal.
Liverpool beat City in the reverse fixture and the Reds are unbeaten in their last four league meetings with ‘Big Six’ clubs. Klopp admits it is his side’s performances against the ‘others’ which have left Liverpool scrambling to secure a top four finish.
“The main reason is we didn’t play good enough against others. When things are going well, you finish your situations. In general, if you don’t score, you have to try harder,” Klopp told his pre-match press conference.
Klopp was asked for his view on Liverpool’s disappointing defeats during the current campaign, with the Reds’ eight league losses already four times as many as his side lost last season.
“There are a lot of explanations for defeats. Forest and Bournemouth very different but both games we should have won. In the past when we struggled, we struggled with possession against these sides. We improved but didn’t finish and reacted badly.
“When we are in the game, we are strong – but we have to make sure we are in the game. We have to deal with setbacks better. It’s something we have to work on.”
