Graham Potter has opened up on Chelsea’s recent improvement and has discussed Mason Mount’s state of mind as speculation surrounds the midfielder’s future.
Chelsea face Aston Villa in the Premier League this weekend as the west Londoners look to build on a four-game unbeaten run in all competitions.
The Blues remain tenth in the table in what has been a challenging campaign for the club, but are within reach of the European places.
Speaking ahead of this weekend’s clash with Villa, who are level on points with Chelsea, Potter opened up on his side’s recent progress but believes there is still much room for improvement at Stamford Bridge.
“We’ve made some steps and we need to carry on with that,” Potter told his pre-match press conference.
“We need to attack better, create better, defend better. Sounds simple but that’s what we need to do.
“They’re feeling good, they’re professional, they know they can handle the recovery from international duty. There’s a nice spirit in the team and group.”
Potter also discussed Mason Mount’s focus, with the midfielder having had a number of ‘niggly injuries’ and being the subject of transfer speculation. The 24-year-old has been linked with an exit after contract talks failed to find an agreement at Chelsea.
“It’s been tough for him because he’s had niggly injuries and noise off the pitch,” Potter said.
“He’s a top professional, how he’s acted with me and around us has been top. Sometimes if things in your career aren’t optimal, you’ve got to act well and he has.”
