Mikel Arteta has called on Arsenal to ’embrace’ the challenge of ending the club’s hoodoo at Anfield.
Arsenal travel to face Liverpool in the Premier League this weekend as the Gunners look to maintain their push for the title. The league leaders are in pursuit of an eighth consecutive top-flight win, but must overcome a wretched recent record in this fixture.
Arsenal have not won at Anfield since 2012, while the club’s last six league visits have all ended in defeat, with 22 goals conceded in the process.
Arteta has called on his side to rise to the challenge on Merseyside this weekend as the north Londoners chase Premier League success this season.
“We have to fully embrace it and go for it.” Arteta told his pre-match press conference.
”It’s a chance to go to Anfield and do something we haven’t done for many years.”
Arteta will come up against Jurgen Klopp this weekend, as the two managers renew rivalries on the touchline. The Spaniard was involved in a heated row with Klopp during Arsenal’s defeat at Anfield in November 2021, in which he was pulled back by his coaching staff.
“That’s football,” Arteta said on the incident.
“We hug each other and move on. I have full respect and admiration from what they have done. I reacted that day to defend our players and that is it.”
