Chelsea ‘hold talks’ with Gavi amid contract dispute

Chelsea have held talks with the representatives of Barcelona midfielder Gavi as the club look to capitalise on the teenager’s contract situation.

Gavi’s future at Barcelona is uncertain with the Catalans unable to register the 18-year-old as a first-team player, due to the club’s economic issues.

Barcelona did agree a new contract with Gavi worth €8m a season and handed the La Masia graduate the club’s number six shirt, but a court then ruled in favour of La Liga who insist Barcelona cannot register new players amid their financial situation.

According to Spanish publication AS, Gavi is unhappy with how Barcelona have handled his contract situation, with the midfielder forced to return to his former shirt number and youth-team deal.

It means the teenager could be available on a free transfer this summer and Chelsea’s technical director Christopher Vivell has met with Gavi’s agent in a bid to persuade the Spain international to move to the Premier League.

Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United have also been linked with Gavi, who won the Golden Boy and Kopa Trophy in 2022 and has already earned 19 senior caps at international level.

Chelsea are understood to have promised Gavi a major role in the club’s rebuild, as the west Londoners conduct the process of appointing a new head coach. Former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique is among those being considered for the position.
