Scholes reckons Man Utd are ‘contenders’ to sign Bellingham

Paul Scholes believes Manchester United are ‘contenders’ to sign Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

Bellingham’s future is set to dominate the summer transfer window with Europe’s top clubs competing for the signature of the England international.

Manchester City and Real Madrid are viewed as frontrunners to land the teenager, who is expected to cost in excess of £100m should he leave Dortmund this summer.

Liverpool are understood to have cooled their interest in Bellingham as a result of the financial package required to sign the midfielder, while Chelsea and Paris Saint-German have been linked with an approach.

Manchester United icon Scholes believes his former side have now emerged as genuine ‘contenders’ to sign the 19-year-old, after a positive first season under Erik ten Hag.

United were interested in the midfielder before his move to Dortmund in 2020 and Scholes believes Bellingham could make the Red Devils ‘a proper team’.

“I think they are contenders [to sign him],” he said on BT Sport.

“If you went back a couple of years you’d have said no chance. Even back to the start of this season. But now I think they have to be.

“He would look at this team and think this is up and coming for the next few years.

“I do think he will sign for Real Madrid, I’m not sure why, but I do hope he comes here. He could make United a proper team.”
