Gareth Southgate has named his England squad for June’s Euro 2024 qualifiers with Malta and North Macedonia.
There are six changes from the squad from March’s international break, with Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze included after a fine run of form for the Eagles. Speaking at his press conference to announce the squad, Southgate said Eze was a player the national side have liked ‘for a long time’.
“We’ve liked him for a long time,” Southgate said.
“He was very unfortunate just before the Euros. We were going to call him into a prep camp and he got an injury.
“He has finished the season very strongly, he can play in a couple of positions across that front line. He has high quality and bursts of speed to go past players with those dribbling skills.”
There’s also a recall for Brighton captain Lewis Dunk, who has been rewarded for an excellent season with the Seagulls with a first inclusion since 2018.
Southgate confirmed that Raheem Sterling was not considered due to a hamstring issue, while Ivan Toney is absent as the forward serves an eight-month ban for breaching the FA’s gambling rules.
