Pep Guardiola has hinted that he wants Ilkay Gundogan to sign a new contract and stay at Manchester City next season.
Gundogan was the hero as Manchester City completed the second leg of a potential treble, with the German scoring twice as Guardiola’s side beat Manchester United 2-1 in the FA Cup final.
The midfielder opened the scoring with a stunning strike after just 12 seconds to score the fastest ever FA Cup final goal, before volleying home a second from Kevin De Bruyne’s free-kick after Bruno Fernandes’ penalty had levelled the score.
Gundogan is out of contract this summer and has been linked with Arsenal and Barcelona as a free agent, but Guardiola has suggested that he wants the 32-year-old – who was his first signing at Manchester City in 2016 – to sign a new deal.
“He knows what I think,” Guardiola said, as per the BBC.
“We are neighbours. We live in the same floor for many years so he is a close friend of mine.
“He plays exceptionally well. I don’t forget him scoring those goals against Aston Villa.
“Hopefully, we can finish in a good way.”
