Peter Schmeichel believes Manchester United were ‘bullied’ during the club’s FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City.
United lost 2-1 to their fierce rivals at Wembley, with Ilkay Gundogan scoring twice as Manchester City completed a domestic double in the first ever cup final to stage a Manchester Derby.
Gundogan’s opener came after just 13 seconds as the German scored the fastest ever FA Cup final goal, before the midfielder struck a second after volleying home from Kevin De Bruyne’s free-kick to keep alive City’s pursuit of a treble.
United had levelled the game through a Bruno Fernandes penalty, but were unable to find a second equaliser as the club’s hopes of a domestic cup double were ended.
Schmeichel – who won five league titles at Manchester United before a short spell at City later in his career – was critical of the Red Devils’ performance and believes goalkeeper David de Gea should have done better on City’s second goal.
“They looked second to everything today,” he said, as per the BBC.
“It is of course very disappointing, but when you look for something to change the dynamics of the game and you see the options that Ten Hag has available to come on, that is just the gulf of difference between the two squads and that came through today.
“It’s interesting to see how much Man City players wanted it today. They were fighting so hard for every loose ball, every scrap that they could get and they got it. In a way United got bullied.
“You’ve got to ask yourself, the second goal that was conceded, I think De Gea should save that.”
