Manchester United hope to conclude a deal to sign Mason Mount ‘early in the transfer window’ as the club plan to sign two players before pre-season begins next month.
United are the firm favourites to sign Mount who appears destined to leave Chelsea, with the midfielder having seen contract talks with the west Londoners fail to find an agreement.
The England international will enter the final season of that contract this summer and Chelsea are not willing to risk losing the 24-year-old on a free transfer in 2024.
Mount has interest from a number of leading clubs with Liverpool, Arsenal, Juventus and Bayern Munich keen on a deal, but United have emerged as front runners and have reportedly reached an agreement on personal terms.
The Red Devils will now push to agree a fee with Chelsea, but The Athletic are reporting that club are reluctant to meet the current asking price of around £70m for a player out of contract next summer. That hold-up opens the door for other clubs to steal in, but United remain the likeliest destination for Mount and want to finalise a deal as soon as possible.
Erik ten Hag is keen to reinforce his squad before the first day of pre-season and plans to bring in two new players before next month, the first of which is hoped to be Mount.
