Manchester United are confident that Mason Mount will not sign a new contract at Chelsea as the club wait for the west Londoners to lower their asking price.
United have been in negotiations with Chelsea over a deal to sign Mount, but are reluctant to meet the midfielder’s asking price which is reported to be around £70m.
Mount’s contract at Chelsea expires next summer and the club run the risk of losing the England international on a free transfer if an extension – or sale – is not agreed.
According to the Telegraph, United are ‘confident’ that Mount will not sign a new deal at Chelsea and are prepared to wait and discover if the Blues will lower the 24-year-old’s price tag. The player is said to be keen on the move to Old Trafford.
Contract talks between Mount and Chelsea broke down earlier this season with the academy graduate feeling undervalued during negotiations. It is understood the proposal from Chelsea was significantly lower than the club’s best-paid players, despite Mount’s importance to the side in recent campaigns.
The midfielder was named as Chelsea’s Player of the Season in 2020/21 and 2021/22 and has made 195 appearances since progressing from the club’s academy system.
Manchester United are keen to capitalise on his contract situation as Erik ten Hag looks to improve his midfield with the addition of a mobile number eight.
