Manchester United reportedly have four alternatives to the signing of Mason Mount after Chelsea rejected a third bid for the midfielder on Friday evening.
United swiftly saw their opening offers of £40 million and £50m rejected by their Premier League rivals, though the Blues did seemingly consider the improved third offer of £55m, before eventually knocking it back.
It has been reported that Chelsea informed United that they would accept a bid of £58 million plus £7m in add-ons, though according to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United think that the West London club are ‘overvaluing’ the 24-year-old, given that he only has a year to run on his deal at Stamford Bridge and could leave for free next summer.
They say that United finalised their list of transfer targets in April, and the signing of Mount is Erik Ten Hag’s ‘preferred option’ in midfield, though add that the Old Trafford outfit have ‘at least four other midfield options to turn to’ should a deal not be reached with Chelsea.
No names are mentioned as to who could be on United’s list of alternatives, though the Red Devils have been linked with Brighton’s Moises Caicedo and West Ham skipper Declan Rice in recent weeks.
Manchester United are known to be on a ‘tight’ budget this summer, and ‘do not want to compromise amid their intention to sign a striker’. They could also need to splash out on a new goalkeeper given that David de Gea hasn’t put pen to paper on a new deal.
Inter Milan’s Andre Onana has seemingly emerged as the favourite, with the Cameroonian having worked under Ten Hag during his time at Ajax, before starring during the Nerazzuri’s run to the Champions League final.
