Liverpool skipper Henderson ‘reluctant’ to join Gerrard in Saudi

Jordan Henderson is reluctant to leave Liverpool and move to The Saudi Pro League despite a proposal from Steven Gerrard and Al-Ettifaq.

Gerrard had been keen to bring his former Liverpool team-mate to Saudi Arabia after being appointed as manager of Al-Ettifaq earlier this month, but Henderson is not believed to be keen on a move to the big-spending division at this stage of his career.

Al-Ettifaq had hoped to persuade the 33-year-old to take on a new challenge after 12 seasons at Anfield and had held talks with Henderson’s representatives. However, the Daily Mail are reporting that Henderson will turn down the offer.

Henderson has made 492 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool and the Reds would be reluctant to lose the midfielder this summer, following the exits of Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner.

Al-Ettifaq are also interested in a deal to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Chelsea, while the club have held talks with Wilfried Zaha after the forward departed Crystal Palace as a free agent this month.

The club’s interest comes as Saudi sides continue to spend big in a bid to attract overseas talent, with names such as Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante and Ruben Neves among those to have completed moves to the Middle East this summer.
