Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has agreed a deal to sign for Marseille on a free transfer, with the Chelsea forward set to undergo a medical with the Ligue 1 side on Thursday.
Aubameyang is set to travel to France to finalise his transfer to the The Stade Vélodrome and will be allowed to depart Chelsea on a free transfer after a disappointing time in west London.
The 34-year-old signed for Chelsea in a £10.3m deal from Barcelona last summer, but failed to make the desired impact and scored just once in five Premier League starts.
The Gabon international is understood to have turned down approaches from The Saudi Pro League in favour of a return to France, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Aubameyang has agreed a three-year deal.
Aubameyang will return to France – the nation of his birth – after previous Ligue 1 spells at Lille, Monaco and Saint-Etienne.
He will become Marseille’s third major signing of the summer after confirmed deals for Atletico Madrid duo Renan Lodi and Geoffrey Kondogbia, in addition to permanent deals for loanees Amine Harit and Ruslan Malinovskyi.
Marseille will hope Aubameyang can replace the goals of another former Arsenal forward, with last season’s leading scorer Alexis Sanchez having left the club as a free agent despite scoring 18 goals in all competitions in 2022/23.
