Liverpool are understood to have outbid Chelsea in the race to sign Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo.
The summer transfer window has seen the Premier League’s leading clubs tussle over defensive midfielders and Liverpool’s latest move has added another twist to developments.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have seen three offers for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia rejected, before news broke that Chelsea had submitted a superior offer for the Belgian teenager worth £48m.
Now, the Telegraph are reporting that Liverpool have lodged a bid for Chelsea target Caicedo, who has been subject of multiple approaches from the west Londoners.
Liverpool are pushing to sign a defensive midfielder as the club’s engine room overhaul continues, having sold both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to the Saudi Pro League.
The Reds have already signed Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton this summer, alongside the addition of Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig.
Liverpool’s offer is understood to have outbid Chelsea’s latest proposal, which was believed to be worth around £80m, though Caicedo’s preference remains a move to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea are also closing in on a deal to sign USA international Tyler Adams from Leeds, after activating the £20m relegation release clause in his contract at Elland Road.
