Doku backed to ‘improve’ Manchester City

Manchester City assistant Juanma Lillo has backed new signing Jeremy Doku to improve the Premier League champions after signing from Rennes.

City have completed the signing of the 21-year-old winger for a fee of £55.4m, with Doku arriving with a reputation as an exciting wide player with a desire to take on defenders.

Lillo – who will take charge of this weekend’s clash with Sheffield United in Pep Guardiola’s absence – has given his view on the new arrival and believes Doku is a talent who can improve City this season.

“Every time a new player arrives we think they are going to bring something and help the team globally,” he said at his pre-match press conference.

“That is the good thing this team has, the idea is to bring players who are better not modify them.

“The team will grow and he will improve us, the team is at a good level.

“He’s a great player, you’ve seen him, he has specific qualities and he can help.”

Lillo provided an update on Pep Guardiola’s health, with the City boss having undergone successful back surgery this week.

“He is telling us the surgery has been successful, his recovery has to take the necessary time.

“He feels fine. I’m happy to see him going correctly.”

On how involved Guardiola has been in the build up to this weekend’s clash, Lillo said: “Everything. The contact is continuous, telephone, video call, everything.

“The contact is continuous, he is watching Sheffield right now. What’s important is his health. It doesn’t keep him from being who he is. He’s fully focussed on the match.
