Tottenham announce Brennan Johnson signing but miss out on Chelsea transfer

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest on transfer deadline day.

The Welsh attacker joins in a deal worth up to £47.5 million, signing a six-year contract with the north London outfit.

The transfer was not announced until very late in the day as Forest wanted to complete the signing of Ibrahim Sangare from PSV Eindhoven before selling Johnson. The Ivorian joins the Reds for a reported transfer fee of £30m.

Johnson was the subject of interest from Premier League clubs such as Brentford and Chelsea after registering eight goals and three assists last season. The Bees dropped out of the race due to Forest’s valuation, while the Blues turned their attention to Cole Palmer, whom they signed for £45m from Manchester City.

That left just Tottenham standing as Ange Postecoglou sought to add to his attacking options following Harry Kane’s £100m move to Bayern Munich.

Spurs also made enquiries to Chelsea about a potential move for centre-back Trevoh Chalobah, whose transfer to Bayern Munich fell through. Forest reportedly submitted a £25m bid for Chalobah, but the defender will stay put at Stamford Bridge.
