Walker age no ‘problem’ after new Man City deal

Pep Guardiola has expressed his delight after Kyle Walker signed a contract extension at Manchester City.

Walker was linked with leaving the Premier League champions during the summer and received interest from Bayern Munich, but has ended speculation surrounding his future with a three-year contract extension at the Etihad.

The right-back has started the season in impressive form and Guardiola expressed his delight that the 33-year-old will continue with the Cityzens.

“He has been really important,” Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend’s fixture with West Ham.

“It’s great that he decided to stay. His mind is here on the pitch, loving football and it’s not a problem.

“Few players have genetics like him. He has stability in his life and it [his age] won’t be a problem.

“He’s already one of the captains, the vote will be taken in the next few days and the boys will decide who is the first captain and who is the next.

“I’ve known Kyle for seven years and when he didn’t play sometimes for tactical reasons he would talk about maybe leaving but he is such an important player to us.

“I was sad that he didn’t get to play in the Champions League final, but look how good his response has been since then.”
