Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hailed Jarell Quansah after the academy graduate made his full Premier League debut against Wolves on Saturday.
The 20-year-old, who has made two appearances off the bench this season, took his place in the starting lineup as part of a makeshift backline alongside centre-back partner Joel Matip, left-back Andy Robertson and Joe Gomez, who was filling in for the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold on the right.
The England youth international as he held his own as Liverpool came from behind to beat Wolves 3-1 at Molineux, impressing Klopp in the process.
“He did exceptionally well,” the German told BBC Sport. “In possession as well he was calm. It was like we had just met in the car park before the game with the organisation in the first half! But he played really well.”
With Liverpool’s Uefa Europa League campaign starting next week, Klopp says he is pleased with the level of depth in the squad ahead of a crowded fixture schedule.
“We have a good squad, no about it,” he said. “We had a super strong bench today. There’s quality, no doubt about it. But even with quality you can play badly, that’s what we did in the first half. So now we have a day of rest and prepare for the Europa League.”
Quansah’s first start didn’t get off to the greatest start as Wolves took an early lead when Hwang converted Pedro Neto’s cross inside the first seven minutes. The visitors were largely outplayed in the opening half.
Liverpool were a much improved side right from the off in the second half and equalised soon after when Mo Salah knocked the ball across the goalmouth for Cody Gakpo to tap in
The Egyptian turned provider once again when he combined with Andy Robertson to give Liverpool the lead with just over five minutes left on the clock.
The game was put to bed in injury time when substitute Elliott was played through on goal by Salah, and his shot was diverted into the goal by Bueno.
