Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has hailed Anthony Gordon after the winger’s ‘outstanding’ start to the new season.
Gordon has bounced back from a challenging first six months at Newcastle to start the new season in impressive form, with the 22-year-old scoring one and creating another in the Magpies’ 8-0 win at Sheffield United on Sunday.
Gordon was named as the UEFA European Under-21 Championship Player of the Tournament during the summer as England won the competition and has continued that momentum into the new campaign, with two goals and two assists from five Premier League starts.
Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s Carabao Cup clash with Manchester City on Wednesday, Howe was full of praise for Gordon’s performances this season.
“I think he has had an outstanding start to the season. I think his athleticism is coming to the fore but he is adding goals and product,” Howe said at his pre-match press conference.
“He had an assist and a goal on Saturday, which is great to see, and all attacking players will be ultimately judged by that.
“I always say when we sign players there needs to be patience. As much as you want them to be in and be outstanding immediately, that’s rare.
“I always knew Anthony’s quality and I think the pre-season has been really good and as were the six months he had with us before the summer.”
