Klopp ‘surprised’ by Szoboszlai as Liverpool thunderbolt seals League Cup progress

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp heaped praise on Dominik Szoboszlai after the summer signing scored a rocket of a goal against Leicester City at Anfield on Wednesday night.

The Reds progressed to the fourth round of the League Cup following a 3-1 win over the Championship outfit, despite going behind when Kasey McAteer scored inside the first three minutes.

Goals from Cody Gakpo, Szoboszlai and Diogo Jota turned the game around for the hosts, who will face Bournemouth at home in the next round of the competition.

Klopp, though, was not happy with Liverpool’s slow start, which has become something of a trend this season. They have conceded the first goal five times in all competitions.

“It was not the best start, it was actually the opposite,” the German told BBC Radio 5 Live. “We had big chances in the first half and couldn’t believe we didn’t score.

“Leicester are a good side and very well set up. Minute by minute we turned it around and it was a good performance. There were so many little stories.

Klopp expressed his surprise at how quickly Szoboszlai has adapted to life at Liverpool after the Hungarian pinged a long range effort in off the crossbar in the second half.

“Dom was a surprise with how fast he has fit in, it was pretty much from the first minute. Top-class player with a lot of quality. He never stops. He learns a lot from the game,” he said.
