Erik ten Hag has backed Andre Onana after the goalkeeper’s latest mistake in Manchester United’s Champions League defeat to Galatasaray.
Onana made an awful error after conceding possession in a dangerous area against Galatasaray, with his mistake leading to Casemiro’s poor challenge and the conceding of a penalty at Old Trafford.
Mauro Icardi missed the spot-kick for Galatasaray, but scored a winner moments later as the Turkish champions claimed a 3-2 win over Ten Hag’s 10-man side at Old Trafford.
Onana’s error was the latest in a line of mistakes since signing for Manchester United from Inter Milan during the summer, with the Cameroon international having struggled since joining the club.
Ten Hag – who worked with the 27-year-old at Ajax – has come out in defence of Onana and says the goalkeeper has the ‘capabilities to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world’.
“We are happy with our goalkeeping group,” Ten Hag said.
“Andre was in one semi-final of the Champions League [with Ajax], he was in the final last season [with Internazionale] so he has capabilities to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world and he has shown that.
“We have already seen in games his great capabilities, also his personality. He will bounce back.”
