Newcastle United defender Dan Burn is in dreamland after helping his boyhood club secure a famous win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Uefa Champions League on Wednesday.
The Blyth native scored the Magpies’ second of the night with a diving header to add to Miguel Almiron’s opener at St James’ Park.
Sean Longstaff grabbed a third shortly after halftime as PSG were at sixes and sevens, before Lucas Hernandez pulled one back for the visitors.
Fabian Schar completed a 4-1 win for Newcastle in injury time with a long range effort that flew past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
“Crazy,” reacted Burn after the final whistle. “It has not sunk in, I am a bit speechless. We wanted to entertain the crowd and get the crowd behind us, but we did well.”
Burn’s goal was originally ruled offside and only awarded after a lengthy VAR check. “When the flag went up I was gutted. I was so angry for Bruno [Guimaraes] shooting, it comes back and soon as it got hung in the air I just went for it.”
He added: “We knew PSG were not going to change the way they play. The times to play high up the pitch and we had the crowd pushing us, we had that for the last goal with the crowd pushing us on for Fab’s goal.”
Dan Burn was playing League One football with Wigan just five years ago, but worked his way back to the Premier League via Brighton and is now playing in Europe’s top competition with the club he grew up supporting.
“I just try to survive at that apprentice level and you try to work your way up,” he said. “I was released by Fulham at 25 years old; to comeback and play Champions League football – I am very proud.
“It is like a dream, I am waiting for someone to wake me up, I am waiting for the bubble to pop. We have a great group and what the gaffer [Eddie Howe] has done with the philosophy we have got.”
Newcastle now sit on top of Group F with four points from their opening two games, with Borussia Dortmund set to visit St James’ Park later this month.
“I can’t believe it obviously. The home games are the ones we can go and attack and Dortmund is next, I cannot believe I am saying Dortmund is next,” he said.
