Arsenal injury update on Saka and Partey ahead of Man City clash

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has delivered an injury update on Bukayo Saka and Thomas Partey ahead of this weekend’s meeting with Manchester City.

The Gunners host the Premier League champions at the Emirates on Sunday, with kickoff scheduled for 4.30pm BST, with just one point separating the two sides in the table.

Arteta revealed that Saka is “in contention” to play against Man City despite nursing an injury. The winger limped off the pitch in the first half of Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat to RC Lens in the Uefa Champions League.

The 22-year-old was also called up to the England squad on Thursday by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate ahead of the October international break amid concerns that he is playing too much football.

“He’s in contention. That’s it, what they told me. I’m not a doctor,” Arteta said in his pre-match press conference.

“I have spoken to Gareth on several occasions. I’ve done my job; I give him the news. We have good communication, he has to make the best decision for the national team.”

One player who will definitely be included in Arsenal’s matchday squad against City is Partey. The Ghanaian injured his groin in September and was not expected to return until after the forthcoming international break.

“Thomas Partey is ahead of schedule. He will be in the squad,” the Arsenal boss confirmed.

Gabriel Martinelli is still a doubt with a muscle injury, while Jurrien Timber remains sidelined with a torn ACL.
