Brighton captain Lewis Dunk believes that the Seagulls were “better” than Liverpool on Sunday, but said that “sloppiness” cost them the chance to win at the Amex Community Stadium.
The hosts took the look through Simon Adingra before Mo Salah equalised in the 40th minute. The Egyptian got his second of the day from the spot just before halftime.
Dunk levelled matters late on to earn a point for Albion, after which the defender praised the side’s character to get back into the game.
“I think we were the better side throughout and then we had a funny five minutes,” he told Sky Sports. “We have got to be better than that. We have shown great character to come back and get the draw.
“Sloppiness from us [let Liverpool take the lead]. I gave the ball away cheaply and they capitalised on that. We have to keep improving, keep learning and get better. After the defeat we have come back and got the draw today. It’s just that final bit at the moment. We are a little bit off.”
Pascal Gross avoided a red card after taking down Dominik Szoboszlai in the box for Liverpool’s penalty, but Dunk felt referee Anthony Taylor was correct not to send the German off.
“No, not really,” he responded when asked if Brighton were lucky not to be reduced to ten men. “I think I was covering and there were others covering.
“We had a good 40 minutes and a mad five minutes that killed us at the end of the half. I think we did well in the second half.”
Brighton remain sixth in the Premier League table, one point behind Liverpool.
