Jude Bellingham can become England’s record caps holder, according to Paul Scholes.
The 20-year-old already has 26 caps, which puts him 99 international appearances behind the current record holder, Peter Shilton. The former Nottingham Forest and Southampton goalkeeper lined out for the Three Lions for 20 years before retiring in 1990.
Bellingham has plenty of time to match that number after starting his England career at the age of 18. Scholes says the only thing that could stop him from doing so are potential injuries incurred by his style of play.
“But with the way he plays, he will pick injuries up. He plays with a lot of hustle and bustle, and is a thick set lad. He’s twisting and turning all the time. I hope to God he doesn’t get injured because he could easily get past that (number).”
Bellingham has taken European football by storm this season following his £88 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund to Real Madrid, scoring ten goals in his opening ten games for the Spanish club.
The Birmingham City academy graduate is set to earn his next two caps this week as England face Australia in a friendly before hosting Italy in a Euro 2024 qualifier. Both games will take place at Wembley.
