Man United identify Harry Maguire replacement as West Ham ‘consider new transfer bid’

Manchester United are ‘keeping tabs’ on Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi while West Ham reportedly mull over a fresh transfer bid for Harry Maguire in January.

The Red Devils are said to be ‘keen’ on the 23-year-old, according to South London Press. The centre-back has impressed since leaving Chelsea to join Palace in 2021 and has broken into the England team this year.

However, the report adds that Man United are only looking to make a move in the summer. Chelsea hold matching rights on any offer the Eagles accept for Guehi, meaning the west London outfit can re-sign the player if they match the transfer fee offered by another club.

Guehi could arrive as the long-term replacement to Maguire, who has fallen down the pecking order of the club’s central defenders since Erik ten Hag became manager in 2022.

The 30-year-old has been linked with West Ham again after his summer move to the Hammers fell through. ESPN claim that that they are ‘considering a fresh approach’ in the January transfer window if his struggles for gametime continue.

Maguire revealed while on England duty this week that he did not turn down the chance to join West Ham. “The actual opportunity to go to West Ham, it wasn’t agreed really between both clubs and myself,” he said.

“It wasn’t just my chance to say, ‘Yes, I’m going.’ It wasn’t agreed between both clubs so the actual opportunity wasn’t there because we didn’t get far enough down the line with it.”

Maguire also hinted that that he could seek a move away from Old Trafford if he continues to be overlooked for gametime. Ten Hag has handed him just nine Premier League starts since the beginning of the last season.

“I’m not going to sit here all my life and play once every month and if it carries on then I’m sure myself and the club will sit down and have a chat about things,” he said.
