Inter Milan chief Giuseppe Marotta has refused to rule out re-signing Andre Onana, following the goalkeeper’s difficult start at Manchester United.
Onana signed for Manchester United in a deal worth £47.2m during the summer transfer window, having starred as Inter Milan reached the Champions League final last season.
The 27-year-old reunited with former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag in the Premier League, but has endured a nightmare start with a number of high-profile errors.
Onana’s form has contributed to a disappointing start to the campaign for the Red Devils, who are tenth in the Premier League table and have opened their Champions League campaign with back-to-back losses.
Ten Hag came out in defence of the goalkeeper following the 3-2 loss to Galatasaray earlier this month, in which Onana’s error handed the Turkish side a route back into the game.
“We are happy with our goalkeeping group. Andre was in one semi-final, last season in a final of Champions League,” Ten Hag said. “[He] can be one of the best goalkeepers in the world. We have seen already his great capabilities and also his personality. He will bounce back.”
Marotta was asked for his opinion on Onana’s start and whether the Cameroonian could return to Inter, admitting ‘anything can happen’ after a ‘great chapter’ for the goalkeeper at the San Siro.
“I can’t predict the future, but in football anything can happen. For sure, it was a great chapter for Onana and for us,” Marotta told Gazetta Dello Sport.
“It was also a successful deal to sign him for free and sell for that money.”
