Rob Page said he was ’emotional’ after Wales reignited hopes of reaching Euro 2024 with a 2-1 win over Croatia in Cardiff.
Fulham winger Harry Wilson scored twice in a performance that Page described as the best of his time in charge, a result which means Wales move above Croatia – semi-finalists at the World Cup last winter – into second place in the group with two games remaining.
Wales’ hopes of reaching the tournament appeared over after defeats to Armenia and Turkey in June, but qualification is now back in their own hands ahead of November’s fixtures with the same two teams.
Page’s future with Wales has been in doubt in recent months, but the 49-year-old said his side issued the perfect response to the speculation.
“Actions speak louder than words,” Page said, as per the BBC.
“I’m sick and tired of having to keep coming on and talk about my future. Let’s just talk about the lads and the performances they have put in.
“I get emotional because I’m so proud of them and they deserve all the plaudits they are going to get.
“I would say it’s the best performance [of my reign] – I am immensely proud.
“In all aspects… how we defended against an excellent team with one of the best midfields in the world. To a man, we were outstanding.”
