Kalvin Phillips opens up on future amid Bayern transfer talks

Kalvin Phillips says he will “make a decision” on his future in the coming months amid reports linking him with a transfer away from Manchester City.

The England midfielder was this week linked with a move to Bayern Munich, with 90min since claiming that the club have ‘made contact’ with the player ahead of the January transfer window. They see him as an alternative to Fulham man Joao Palhinha, who remains their top target.

Phillips is said to be ‘increasingly likely’ to leave the Etihad in the near future, with Premier League clubs Everton and Newcastle United linked with the 27-year-old. He has made just two league starts since joining Man City from Leeds United last summer.

“I know that I need to be playing games and competing every weekend,” he told BBC Sport. “I’m going to have to make a decision on [my future] over the next months.

“He [Gareth Southgate] just says that for me to keep my spot I have to be playing games. That’s what I want to do. I have agreed with Gareth on that.

“I want to play football and want to play as much as possible. Over the last year and a half, I haven’t been able to do that due to injuries and [other factors].

“It’s something I am going to have to think about. Hopefully, my chance does come but if it doesn’t then I will have to make other decisions as well.”
