Inter chief backs Lautaro Martinez to ‘reject top clubs’

Giuseppe Marotta has backed Lautaro Martinez to reject approaches from ‘many top clubs’ and sign a new contract at Inter Milan.

Martinez has began the new season in scintillating form with 10 goals in eight Serie A appearances for Inter, who are two points behind leaders AC Milan in the table.

The Argentina international’s current contract expires in 2026, but Inter are keen to tie the club captain down to a new long-term deal. Several leading European clubs are understood to be admirers of Martinez, who has scored 113 goals in 243 games for Inter.

Real Madrid and Chelsea are among the clubs to have been linked, but Marotta is confident Martinez will turn down interest from abroad and sign a new deal.

Inter lost Milan Skriniar on a free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain during the summer, but Marotta believes Martinez will remain at the San Siro.

“Lautaro is not like (Milan) Skriniar. If he wants to stay, we’re also keen on new deal and we will be on the right way together,” Marotta told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“It’s great to have a player who rejects many top clubs in order to stay where he is.”
