Ten Hag discusses change in Bruno Fernandes role

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has discussed his decision to change the position of Bruno Fernandes in recent fixtures.

Fernandes started from the right-wing in fixtures with Galatasaray and Brentford before the international break, a move from the midfielder’s usual central role.

The Portugal international has been one of the Premier League’s best creative talents in a central position since signing fro Manchester United, but Ten Hag believes the club captain is capable of performing from the right and said ‘injuries’ have played a part in his tactical tweak.

United have dealt with the absences of Antony and Jadon Sancho during the season’s opening weeks due to off-field issues.

“As a squad, in periods of the season you have to deal with certain situations like injuries, at full-back and right wing in the last couple of games. We have to find solutions,” Ten Hag said at his pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend’s Premier League game with Sheffield United.

“Bruno is a very good right winger as well, he has his freedom there, playing not typical but coming inside more, like the 10 role and always you want to use a player like this.

“He’s a player that creates one of the most chances in the Premier League. You always want him in a position where he is best. He will contribute to the positive result.”
