Manchester United required a stoppage-time penalty save from Andre Onana to earn a 1-0 win over FC Copenhagen in the Champions League.
Erik ten Hag’s side got their European campaign back on track with a narrow win over the Danish champions, with Harry Maguire’s goal the difference between the sides.
United had struggled to break down their opponents in a below-par performance from the home side, but found an opener as Maguire headed home from Christian Eriksen’s delivery on 72 minutes to put the Red Devils ahead.
United looked to have done enough to earn their first points of the group stage campaign, but Copenhagen were handed a last-gasp chance to equalise from the penalty spot after Scott McTominay’s foul inside the area.
Onana – who has faced criticism since signing for Manchester United in the summer – guessed right to keep out the effort from Jordan Larsson, son of former Red Devils forward Henrik. The save was the last action of the game, with Onana hopeful United can build on the win.
“I’m just doing my job, the most important thing is to win against a tough team,” Onana told TNT Sports on his penalty save.
“I am happy for the victory, we did a good game and a big goal from Harry [Maguire].
“We are Manchester United. We are a big club, big players. It’s just a matter of time, now we have to continue like this. I have no doubt we will make it.”
Maguire’s match-winner continued an improved run of form for the centre-back who admitted he was delighted to see the home fans singing his name after a challenging period.
“It is amazing. When you are not on your game it gets picked up, but I am really proud and pleased how I have acted over this six to 12 months,” Maguire said.
“I have been given an opportunity and I want to help the team and get the club back to where it should be.”
