Newcastle draw up shortlist of Tonali replacements

Newcastle have drawn up a shortlist of Premier League names to replace SandroTonali as the midfielder faces a lengthy ban.

Tonali’s representatives are understood to be in negotiations with the Italian football association over a 10-month ban, after the 23-year-old admitted breaching gambling rules by placing bets on matches in which he played.

The ban would see Tonali, who signed for Newcastle from AC Milan in a £55m deal last summer, suspended for the remainder of the Premier League season and next summer’s European Championship, with Newcastle looking at potential replacements in the January window.

According to The Athletic, a number of Premier League names are potential options for the Magpies. Head of recruitment Steve Nickson is understood to be keen on Fulham’s Joao Palhinha and Everton’s Amadou Onana, while Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has regularly been linked with a move to St James’ Park in recent transfer windows.

Options from across Europe reportedly include Valencia’s Andre Almeida, who could be available for around £20m, and Augsburg’s Arne Engels.

Meanwhile, iNews claim Newcastle could enter the race for Kalvin Phillips. The England international is expected to leave Manchester City in January after starting just two Premier League games since signing from Leeds in a £45m deal in 2022.
